Route & Timeline

The NWP route

The team will be doing the route marked on the map, East to West

- See detailed live route here (live progress of the RIB)

Departure: 28th August 2010, 2pm, from Pond Inlet
Arrival:
Around the 11th September 2010, at Tuktoyaktuk

Leg 1: 340 nautical miles - from Pond Inlet to Resolute Bay
Leg 2: 700 nautical miles - from Resolute Bay to Cambridge Bay
Leg 3: 660 nautical miles - from Cambridge Bay to Tuktoyaktuk

Total:  1700 nautical miles

The dates are susceptible of changing and the team will need to keep a close eye on updates about the ice!

The Zodiac can reach speeds well in excess of 40 knots on calm, flat water and with good visibility.

During the passage, if conditions allow, the team intend to press on and make the most of fair weather. Should visibility, waves or ice hinder their progress then average speeds and distance covered may reduce considerably.

To give an idea, in 24 hours of continuous running the Zodiac could cover distances of:

360 nautical miles at 15 knots
480 nautical miles at 20 knots
600 nautical miles at 25 knots
720 nautical miles at 30 knots

The intention though is to complete the challenge maintaining the strength of the crew and monitoring closely the health of the Zodiac and its engines.
